Unsound extension privacy policy
Effective October 25, 2026.
The Unsound extension sends no data to the developer or anyone else. It has no analytics, ads or tracking, and needs no account.
What it uses
| Data | Why | Where it stays |
|---|---|---|
| Audio of tabs you control | Volume, mute, Boost and EQ | Processed live; never recorded |
| Tab titles, sites, site icons | Labels in the controls | Session storage (icons not stored), cleared on quit |
| Volume settings for ≤100 sites | Restore a site's settings next time | Browser storage until you forget it |
| Sites you allow for playback | Pause and resume their media | Browser permissions until you remove |
| Playback state on allowed sites | Show and toggle play/pause | Session storage, cleared on quit |
| IDs of tabs turned down | Mute them again after an update | Browser storage; no titles or sites |
Saved sites contain only the scheme, host and port, such as
https://www.youtube.com, never paths or queries. On allowed sites the
extension reads only audio and video elements, not page text, forms or
passwords. Browser sync is not used.
Unsound.app
If you install Unsound.app on your Mac and connect it, the extension shares the titles, sites, icons and control state of its tabs with the app over local native messaging. The app keeps them only while connected. Audio stays in the browser.
Removing data
- Saved volumes → Forget / Forget all: removes saved site settings.
- Allowed sites → Remove / Remove all: removes playback access.
- Stop controlling (✕): releases a tab.
- Uninstalling the extension removes everything it stored.
